This course will chart the development of Millais’ art, from his Pre-Raphaelite phase to his later portraits and landscapes. Rossetti, Millais and Holman Hunt, all aged around 20, founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848. It changed British art forever. This course explores the movement between 1847 and 1860. Study detailed, engaging, complex paintings, such as Ophelia and The Awakening Conscience through richly illustrated slide lectures.

Apart from Rubens, Antony van Dyck was the greatest Flemish painter of the 17th Century. The course will follow van Dyck’s career throughout Europe and later in Britain and reveal the Flemish artist’s unique impact on British cultural life, from the reign of Charles I onwards. We will study some of the finest and most magnificent paintings that van Dyck produced during his years in Britain and his continuing visual legacy through portraits by artists from the eighteenth to twentieth centuries, including Sir Joshua Reynolds and John Singer Sargent.

The course will look at the career and work of Pablo Picasso (1881-1973). Painter, sculptor, graphic artist, ceramicist and designer he was the most famous, versatile and prolific artist of recent times and arguably the most influential artist of the 20th century. His personality dominated the development of the visual arts and his work was a wealth of themes and styles. He provided the incentive for most of the revolutionary changes during his time. This course will run parallel with the National Gallery exhibition Picasso: Challenging the Past between 25 February and 7 June 2009.
