In the years leading up to the Second World War one in ten townspeople were members of The Guildford Institute. Lectures, play-readings, societies covering activities such as photography, natural
history, chess and bridge, have been part of the curriculum since it was established.

For the past 125 years, the Institute has been an important part of the life and culture of the town.
The image shown here, of one of the Institute’s carnival floats, are just a few of a large collection that show the commitment by the Institute to civic events.

This exhibition, curated by the library volunteers, will illustrate the relationship between town and Institute, using materials and images from the Library’s Special
Collections.
