The Low Countries have been at the centre of conflict in Western Europe throughout history, hence their description as the "Cockpit of Europe". This course will examine two of the battles fought here that are especially iconic in our history. The course will be illustrated by slides taken on fieldwork by the lecturer.

Exploring the Ypres Salient

This area is of particular relevance to the British experience in World War I as it was mainly our responsibility from the Autumn of 1914 to November 1918. These sessions, illustrated by fieldwork slides, will introduce students to the intensity of conflict in this relatively small area.

Exploring the Somme Battlefield

The Somme had a strong impact on the British experience of World War I because a relatively amateur army suffered the terrible and unexpected consequences of inexperience. However there were some successes over the four month period of the battle and this course will examine, with the aid of fieldwork slides, the overall picture of what occurred.
