This was a difficult time for British agriculture with contrasting periods of prosperity and failure. There was a need to respond to changing technology, difficult economics, early encroachments of globalization, wars, droughts and periods of excessive rainfall. This is a worthwhile study of a major industry to the point when it was absorbed in the Common Agricultural Policy.
