The Guildford Institute Library

Painting of the library interiorThe Library has occupied the same room in the Guildford Institute's Ward Street site since 1893. It accommodated the large collection of books which the Institute had accumulated during the latter part of the 19th century. A considerable number of Victorian and early 20th century books have been retained. The Library also holds long runs of Victorian periodicals such as The Illustrated London News, The Graphic, Punch, The Engineer and The Studio.

The Institute Library holds a unique Local History Collection comprising local history books, ephemera, photographs, prints and drawings relating to the history, antiquities and topography of Guildford and Surrey since the mid 19th century.

In addition, the Library has a collection of up to date fiction and non-fiction which may be borrowed by Institute members.

The Library is open Tuesday to Friday 10.00 - 3.00 and 10.30-1.30 on 2 February and 1 March. It will also be open until 4.30pm on Wednesday afternoons following Afternoon Talks.

Members of the public may visit the Library by arrangement.
