In this session we shall explore how our theories of the nature and formation of the Moon have
changed from the Renaissance to date, ranging from the first telescopic observations, through the
pre-Apollo theories, to the ‘Giant Impact Hypothesis’. We shall also examine the enormous challenge and
achievement of Project Apollo and how it contributed to our current understanding of the Earth’s satellite.
