Overview

Scientific and philosophical developments in the nineteenth century encouraged materialistic worldviews and undermined religious certainty for many. Yet some artists affected by new thought still depicted angels. This lecture will explore work by Burne-Jones, Watts, Bastien-Lepage and Manet, and images produced under the stress of world war and some idiosyncratic modern pictures.
