Art and Activism: Mary Watts and the Women’s Suffrage Movement in Surrey (T241)
22 January 2020 @ 2:45 pm - 3:45 pm
Speaker: Dr Lucy Ella Rose
Lucy Ella Rose is Lecturer in Victorian Literature at the University of Surrey. Her collaborative doctoral award from the University of Surrey and Watts Gallery supported her research on neglected women in 19th century creative partnerships, including Christina Rossetti, Mary Watts, and Evelyn De Morgan.
Pioneering suffragist, Mary Watts played a central role in local suffrage networks and was also part of a much wider women’s movement. Lucy’s talk will draw on her book Suffragist Artists in Partnership: Gender, Word and Image, to reveal Mary’s little-known yet central role in the women’s suffrage campaign in Surrey, and how it became the calling of her later life.
