Enjoy armchair travel this summer – to an exotic destination and sometimes back in time! From the 19th century, British artists went to Egypt, seeking local colour, dramatic monuments and powerful light. They also reconstructed ancient civilisation and sacred stories from the Bible land. Artists include David Roberts, J. F. Lewis, Frederick Goodall, Alma-Tadema, G.F. Watts, Leighton, Poynter and many others.

Frank Dillon, The Towers of the Kaliphs, Cairo, c. 1850 - 1906, watercolour on paper
