Since ancient times comets, “long-haired stars”, have both fascinated and horrified us. Astronomical observations from Earth, and more recently data from fly-by space missions, have revealed much about their nature and origin, which in turn has given us important information about the formation of the solar system. Are comets harbingers of doom, or did they perhaps deliver life to Earth?
