Childhood experiences have been shaped not only by gender and social class but also by changing attitudes in society, from concern over foundlings in the 18th century to compulsory education, increased leisure and child welfare in the 20th century. We will be looking at what it meant to be a child in Britain at a time of growing industrialisation and examining the ways in which education changed as the state became increasingly involved and childhood became recognised as a distinct stage in life.
