Light travels at a finite speed, so looking far into space is to look back in time, revealing how the universe developed. This course will explore its evolution from soon after the Big Bang to the formation of galaxies and the huge variety of stars within them: brown dwarves to red giants, supernovae, neutron stars and, yes, black holes. We will also examine the formation of planets, highlighting those in our own solar system about which we have recently learned so much. Some of the stories behind their discovery are as fascinating as the discoveries themselves.
