The year 2020 was the 400th anniversary of the birth of John Evelyn, whose diaries were first published in 1818. Evelyn also wrote about trees, horticulture and air pollution and produced the first book about salads – Sallets.

He was a passionate gardener, interested in design and plants and always seeking knowledge and improvements, and created important gardens at Sayes Court, Albury and Wotton.
