Julia Margaret Cameron – Her Life and Work- T267 (Online)
19 May 2021 @ 3:30 pm - 4:45 pm BST
This event is part of our Window on the World talk series, which explores a variety of topics on weekday afternoons.
Novelist Jody Cooksley, author of The Glass House, will explore the life and work of Julia Margaret Cameron and her contribution to the art of Photography.
A pioneer photographer, now widely acknowledged as one of the 19th century’s most important portraitists and originator of ‘the selfie’, Julia Margaret Cameron’s work was contentious during her lifetime. To succeed as a female photographer, she had to take on the Victorian patriarchy, the art world and, ultimately, her own family. At the time, it was thought to be a dark science, not suitable for women and certainly not art. There were also fears it would cause the death of painting.
