About the Speaker

Lesley Myles

Having studied French history, politics and economics in Scotland and Strasbourg, and then taken a graduate business course at Oxford, Lesley began working in Geneva. Returning to the UK, she was employed in public relations at The Law Society in London where her French and German language skills proved useful in negotiations with Europe. On moving to Surrey with her young family, Lesley taught part-time in school and Adult Education. Her interest in the rule of law dramatically developed when she was appointed a magistrate in both adult and youth courts. On a couple of occasions, Lesley was even asked to take on the role of court interpreter when a French linguist was not available to assist the defendant – which she described as a salutary experience standing in the dock beside the accused!

Lesley served as Chairman of Surrey Probation Service and she has also worked in the voluntary sector as Chairman of several Surrey charities.

Teaching, however, has always been Lesley’s passion. Lesley says she feels privileged to have taught a wide range of people – from age 3 to 83.  Her primary aim at The Guildford Institute is to enable people to communicate effectively in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and to enjoy the challenge of keeping their French up to date in a changing world.

V Café at The Guildford Institute provides a friendly catering service using high quality, fresh, vegetarian and vegan ingredients.
