To compete with the USA in civil aviation post WWII, Britain took a leap into the unknown to develop the world’s first operational turbojet airliner. The result was a beautiful, yet fatally flawed aircraft – the Comet. Through brilliant work at Farnborough, hard engineering lessons were learnt, leading to ultimate success. What were the challenges and how were they met?
