In 1997 The Royal Academy’s ‘Sensation’ exhibition, a collection of art owned by Charles Saatchi, made a major splash in the art world. It introduced a wider audience to the YBAs (Young British Artists) Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst and their contemporaries. Hugely controversial, the exhibition drew huge crowds and tabloid protest. Despite this, several of the artists involved have become Royal Academicians; this lecture explores the impact of this seminal exhibition.
