To “fly” into space has been a long-held dream. The first serious studies were made in the 1920s, and following World War 2, the rocket propulsion technology needed had come of age. The next step was to learn to fly at hypersonic speeds. This was achieved with the X-15. Here we look at the development of the “rocket plane”.
