In the twentieth century it proved impractical to fully realise the dream of flying to space and back – but a compromise semi-reusable space launcher could be made. This is the story of the development of NASA’s Space Shuttle and the USSR’s Buran. Today new technologies enable tourists to fly to space, and perhaps the true spaceplane is on the horizon.
