In this course we will acquaint ourselves with the Cynics, and consider some important distinctions between the Cynic and the Stoic ways of life. We will then explore what the Stoics mean by ‘simple living’, as well as how we can use the gift of reason to ‘live according to nature’.
Suggested reading: Letters from a Stoic by Seneca (translated by Robin Campbell) Meditations by Marcus Aurelius (translated by Martin Hammond)
There will be a 1-hour break for lunch.

Darren Harper
Darren holds a BA (Hons) English & Creative Writing (1st class), a PGCE in Lifelong Learning, and has been an adult education teacher for 10 years. In addition to the Guildford Institute, he also teaches residential courses at Dillington House (Somerset), Higham Hall (Cumbria), Knuston Hall (Northamptonshire) and Marlborough College (Wiltshire), as well study days at various independent libraries throughout the UK.
