Overview

Ian Watson

Ian Watson is a book conservator and accredited member of the Institute of Conservation. He worked as the Preservation Manager at Lambeth Palace Library for 5 years, and set up The Sussex Conservation Consortium
with his business partner Ruth Stevens in 2013.

Ian’s talk will begin with an introduction to the ethics, techniques, equipment and materials behind modern book conservation. He will then discuss the project of conserving the Institute Library’s annotated copy of The
Art of Glass. Ian will outline the challenge of preserving the originality and historically important aspects of the object, whilst also treating the binding and textblock in order to re-create a mechanically robust book, capable of allowing safe access to the text and marginalia.
