This year marks the 200-year anniversary of Queen Victoria’s birth. English identity was an issue when Victoria became Queen in 1837 and chose as her husband, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. There was opposition to the marriage and few people had much enthusiasm for Albert.

Victoria and Albert were headstrong, impassioned and both determined to be the ruler. Drawing widely on contemporary sources, diaries and memoirs, Dr Judy Hill will re-examine one of the most influential marriages of the 19th century.
