Miss Bell was so well regarded by the Turks that she was known as Effendi, a title typically afforded to a highly-respected professional man. Miss Bell was also a mountaineer, an explorer, a linguist, an archaeologist, a poet and the architect of the independent Kingdom of Iraq. Margaret Westwood, member of the Institute and former Lecturer in Economics at the University of Surrey, will talk to
us about this truly remarkable woman.
