This course presents a lively, engaging account of the rise and fall of the Roman Empire. At its height, the Roman Empire spanned across the entire Mediterranean and included more than 60 million inhabitants. The empire was one of the most famous and influential states in all of world history and the story of its spectacular rise, decline and disastrous fall has exerted an irresistible fascination for the last 2,000 years. Part 1 of this course includes history of the Roman Empire from the Early Republic to Gibbon’s Five Good Antonine Emperors.
Please note that special measures have been put into place to mitigate the risk of Coronavirus infection when attending our face-to-face lectures. A one-way system will be in place to control infection risk around the building. Increased cleaning routines and surface cleaning between classes will also be in place. In the classroom, hand sanitiser will be available and we will ensure a minimum distance of 1 metre between participants, which will be increased if possible. We will pay special attention to ventilation and all participants will be asked to wear a face covering at all times. The tutor will be at a minimum distance of 2 metres from participants at all times and will not be required to wear a face covering to avoid communication problems.
