At the start of Queen Victoria’s reign the public had long been in the habit of self-medicating, partly because of the scarcity of public health provision but principally because most people did not have the funds to pay a doctor or apothecary. Illnesses were managed rather than cured and it was not until the end of the 19th century that real advances were made in the understanding of the causes of ill health.

Judy will explore the founding three great pharmaceutical firms; Thomas Beecham, Jesse Boot and Thomas Holloway.

Free for members & non-members. Booking essential.
