Window on the World: Stories From the Workhouse – T279 (Face to Face and Online)
11 May 2022 @ 3:00 pm - 4:15 pm BST
Overview
A Talk by The Guildford Institute Library & Archives Volunteers
Records of the destitute and poor are rarely heard but this talk will bring to light the voices of Elizabeth Amelia Chilton, William Reading, Hannah Stevens and Mary Ann Raggate.
They are amongst some of the 250 paupers who were in the Guildford Union workhouse on the night of the 1881 census.
This talk will be given by volunteers from The Guildford Institute Library using material from their extensive archive collection. They will guide the audience through a brief history of The Spike and bring their stories to life.
