SUMMARY:Guildford Arts Exhibition - Photographer John Walmsley
DESCRIPTION:Guildford Institute and Guildford Arts\, in collaboration with Guildford Festival of the Arts\, are pleased to present their next exhibition from talented artist John Walmsley. \nSpanning decades of extraordinary documentary photography\, this exhibition traces John’s artistic journey from his formative years at Guildford School of Art right up to recent town events. With a dedicated focus on ordinary people living their lives\, John’s work offers a rich\, intimate record of communities and moments that might otherwise go unnoticed. \nKnown for his immersive approach\, John often commits weeks at a time to living within the communities he photographs — building trust\, absorbing atmosphere\, and capturing life with authenticity and warmth. \nThe exhibition showcases a compelling range of landmark projects: the 1968 sit-in at Guildford School of Art; a vivid portrait of life on the Wester Hailes housing scheme in Edinburgh in 1979; an insider’s view of the AA School of Architecture in 1975\, where John was a part-time lecturer; the colourful Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride along the High Street in 2024; and a behind-the-scenes look at a professional repertory theatre company in the 1970s. \nA celebration of real life\, real people\, and real moments.  \nMeet the Artist — 1 October 2026 @ The Guildford Institute — 7pm

SUMMARY:Impressionist Revolutions - GI 26 112
DESCRIPTION:From ridicule to the world’s favourite art movement is quite a turnaround.  The second half of the 19th century saw huge changes – technical\, social and creative.  The movement that became known as “Impressionism” developed out of these new developments. We will trace how all these changes contributed and how it became a “doorway” through which the next generations passed\, opening up to new ways of painting. \nThis lecture is part of Guildford Festival of the Arts

SUMMARY:Emin and Kahlo: The Pleasure and the Pain - GI 26 113
DESCRIPTION:In a year that features both Tracey Emin (b. 1963) and Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) in exhibitions at Tate Modern\, it seems fitting to reflect on the way these two artists used their life experiences to express pleasure and pain in their works of art. In 2000 Mary McCartney photographed Tracey Emin as Frida Kahlo lying on a bed; this bold image serves to highlight the interconnection of these two women artists who dared to be different. \nDoors/Bar open from 6:30pm \nThis lecture is part of Guildford Festival of the Arts
