SUMMARY:Archaeology: An Introduction - Part 2 - GI 26 214
DESCRIPTION:“Archaeology is rubbish.” It may sound surprising\, but archaeology often begins with what people leave behind. From broken pottery and discarded tools to traces of ancient settlements\, the “rubbish” of the past provides valuable insights into human history. \nArchaeology: An Introduction is a comprehensive 12-week course designed to give students a solid foundation in archaeological methods\, terminology\, and practice. Exploring the development of archaeology from its early beginnings to the scientific techniques used today\, students will develop observational skills while engaging with the theoretical\, ethical\, and practical challenges of the discipline. \nFollowing a pathway similar to that of a first-year undergraduate archaeology student\, the course combines personal study\, group discussion\, field observation\, and a personal presentation. Students will build confidence in archaeological language\, recording methods\, excavation practices\, and trench discipline\, preparing them for future fieldwork opportunities. \n  Please note that the course is divided into two parts (see below) – students will need to participate both parts in order to join the excavation project. \n\nPart 1: 14 October – 9 December 2026 (8 sessions)\nPart 2: 20 January – 10 February 2027 (4 sessions)\n\nUpon completion of the course\, students will have the opportunity to apply for participation in an archaeological project and excavation in 2027.

SUMMARY:Debutantes and Taxi Drivers: The London Auxiliary Ambulance Service in the Blitz - T414
DESCRIPTION:What was it like to drive an ambulance through the London Blitz? Who joined up and why? \nThe volunteer ambulance service has been called ‘the forgotten service’. Naomi explores the reasons for this and takes a look at the lives of some of the people who joined up. \nNaomi is a history writer with a particular interest in the lives of women\, especially those neglected by posterity. \nWe’re delighted to offer our afternoon talks on a Pay What You Can basis. We believe everyone should have access to educational and cultural opportunities\, and that no one should be excluded because of their financial circumstances. Our talks are £7 for all – if anyone feels they need to pay less than this\, please call the team or visit us in person.
