SUMMARY:Repeat Course: Two Histories of the Bayeux Tapestry – GI 26 211
DESCRIPTION:Since its creation 950 years ago\, The Bayeux Tapestry has never left France; this year\, it will be on loan to the British Museum (10 September 2026 – 11 July 2027). No medieval artefact is remotely comparable to it – its almost intact survival is little short of miraculous. Nearly 70 metres long\, it depicts the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings in 1066. In this course we will examine the story that it tells us\, scene by scene. Then we will explore the remarkable\, and sometimes turbulent\, history of the tapestry itself. Two histories in one morning! \nThis is a repeat course course.

SUMMARY:Project Apollo (1960 – 67) – Plan\, Preparation\, Tragedy (also online) - GI 26 139
DESCRIPTION:A Journey to the Moon has been a long-held dream. Under President John F. Kennedy it became a cold-war imperative. This is the story of how the USA planned such a mission and set about solving the many engineering problems involved – sadly culminating in the tragic loss of Virgil Grissom\, Edward White and Roger Chaffee in the Apollo 1 fire.

SUMMARY:Sir Christopher Wren: Science\, Domes & Spires - T408
DESCRIPTION:Wren’s world-class legacy was formed against a backdrop of civil war\, political and religious upheaval. A founding member of the Royal Society\, his impactful scientific and mathematical ideas and inventions are lesser known\, compared to the genius of his architecture. Wren designed a stunning collection of churches\, hospitals\, libraries\, mansions and palaces. His masterpiece\, St Paul’s Cathedral\, was an engineering and design triumph that took 35 years to complete. Buried there\, the inscription on his tomb speaks for itself: ‘If you would seek a monument\, look around you’. \nWe’re delighted to offer our afternoon talks on a Pay What You Can basis. We believe everyone should have access to educational and cultural opportunities\, and that no one should be excluded because of their financial circumstances. Our talks are £7 for all – if anyone feels they need to pay less than this\, please call the team or visit us in person.

SUMMARY:Dean Dyson - WE006
DESCRIPTION:GI Music Lounge\nDean Dyson A 21st Century Troubadour\nTo linger a while and listen to Dean is to lose yourself\, however momentarily\, away from the clamour and chatter of daily life. How to describe his distinctive baritone timbre? Colour\, richness\, depth? Tick all boxes. How about a generous helping of 80% cacao mellifluousness? Present and correct. A vocal range that can pretty much span the whole nine yards from Paul Robeson to Paul Simon? Access all areas. \nAnd there’s an underpinning of effortlessness and confidence that comes from an instinctive musical ability honed by a lifetime of performing. Then stir in his peerless acoustic guitar accompaniment and a vocal phrasing that’s easily up there with the Bennetts and the Bublés of the world and you’re left wondering why this guy’s not on The Pyramid at Glasto’ or at the very least wowing viewers with an intimate set on Later with Jools. \nDean’s career has spanned nearly a half a century and he’s showing no sign of slowing down. \nCatch him here for a great evening\, well worth £15! You won’t be disappointed. \nFor a taster\, try out his self-penned Siobhan on Spotify. \n \nDoors/licensed bar open 7pm \nMusic 7.30pm (with interval) \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThis event is sponsored by Andertons Music Co. \nOur GI Music Lounge events are held as fundraising events for The Guildford Institute.

SUMMARY:The British Experience of the Napoleonic Wars - GI 26 143
DESCRIPTION:Britain’s population was left scarred by experiences of lives lost and financial hardship during the Napoleonic wars. Fear of invasion was widespread in the early stages of the wars\, and collapsing banks\, high taxes and worries over trade led to distress for many. Repressive laws were enacted leading to a growth in radicalism. This course will examine the impact and the legacy of these conflicts.

SUMMARY:Mothering Heights: Finding Mrs Brontë - T409
DESCRIPTION:Before Cathy met Heathcliff\, before Jane Eyre met Mr Rochester\, Maria Branwell met Mr Brontë. They married and their real Regency love story rivals any Brontë novel. \nMaria gave us Charlotte\, Emily and Anne Brontë\, the most gifted literary siblings the world has ever known. She then vanished from history for 200 years. So who was the missing mother of genius? \nSharon shares her quest across the West Country to unearth Maria’s remarkable\, untold life story which she has published in her bestselling biography\, Mother of the Brontës.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Tai Chi - Short Form - GI 26 107
DESCRIPTION:Tai Chi provides core balance\, harmony\, and wellbeing. Although considered a martial art\, Tai Chi is also meditative and an energising exercise. \nIn this course\, tutor Devdan will introduce Yang Style Tai Chi concentrating on short forms; a series of continuous\, flowing movements which are performed slowly and gracefully. The forms are learnt gradually\, posture by posture\, working from the mind through natural movements of the body. \nStudents are advised to wear comfortable clothing to allow stretching and smooth-soled exercise shoes. Students are encouraged to practise at home between classes. If you are unsure of the suitability of the level\, please contact the tutor via the Institute. \nSuitable for all levels\, including complete beginners.
