DESCRIPTION:What was it like to drive an ambulance through the London Blitz? Who joined up and why? \nThe volunteer ambulance service has been called ‘the forgotten service’. Naomi explores the reasons for this and takes a look at the lives of some of the people who joined up. \nNaomi is a history writer with a particular interest in the lives of women\, especially those neglected by posterity. \nWe’re delighted to offer our afternoon talks on a Pay What You Can basis. We believe everyone should have access to educational and cultural opportunities\, and that no one should be excluded because of their financial circumstances. DESCRIPTION:Explore the hidden world of espionage and its powerful role in shaping history from antiquity to the Cold War. Uncovering  the spies\, codebreakers\, double agents\, and intelligence networks who influenced wars\, governments\, and global events from the shadows.  \nWe begin with the origins of espionage in the ancient\, Roman\, and medieval worlds\, before moving into the evolution of codes\, ciphers\, and secret communication\, including famous cases such as Mary\, Queen of Scots and the Zimmermann Telegram. The course then examines the Napoleonic Wars and the First World War\, highlighting the rise of organised intelligence and figures such as Mata Hari and the codebreakers of Room 40.  \nThe final session explores the Second World War and Cold War\, from Bletchley Park and Operation Mincemeat to the Cambridge spy ring and nuclear espionage.  \nBlending political intrigue\, human drama\, and interactive decoding exercises\, this course reveals espionage as the hidden engine of history.

DESCRIPTION:Probably the foremost Edwardian garden designer\, Sir Edwin Lutyens’s designs had a lasting impact on the residential garden style – formal with strong\, clean lines\, unfussy\, often mirroring the design of the house. As a boy he lived between London and Thursley\, in Surrey. Lutyens was mentored by Gertrude Jekyll and subsequently formed a close partnership with her that lasted over forty years. The focus of this talk will be on his life and his garden designs.     \nPlease note that there will be no break during this lecture.
