SUMMARY:Surrey Architecture: Twentieth Century Buildings - GI 26 196
DESCRIPTION:Increasing populations and the sprawl of London led to extensive 20th century Surrey building. Municipal buildings from grand Edwardian town halls to less distinguished civic centres followed local government reorganisations. We study the Surrey suburb\, also ground-breaking individual homes including Oliver Hill’s Joldwynds and Patrick Gwynne’s The Homewood. Ecclesiastical architecture includes Guildford Cathedral\, and nonconformist and Catholic churches in modern styles.

SUMMARY:Poverty and Unrest: Swing Riots in Surrey 1830-32 - T419
DESCRIPTION:The Swing Riots of 1830 – 1832 took place against the increasing pauperisation of labourers. Riots began in Kent in November 1830 and swiftly spread across the counties of southern England. It was marked by attacks of arson against farmers and others\, by the breaking of threshing machines\, the sending of anonymous letters\, demands for higher wages and relief and the exaction of customary “doles”. The common aim was the desire to improve the agricultural worker’s lot. \nThis illustrated talk will examine how the county of Surrey was affected by the riots including the hanging of one of the perpetrators. \nWe’re delighted to offer our afternoon talks on a Pay What You Can basis. We believe everyone should have access to educational and cultural opportunities\, and that no one should be excluded because of their financial circumstances. Our talks are £7 for all – if anyone feels they need to pay less than this\, please call the team or visit us in person.

SUMMARY:Love\, Hate and Family History - GI 26 199
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop style course we explore family history through a powerful and often overlooked lens: emotion. Rather than focusing only on names\, dates\, and records\, we examine how love\, hate\, loyalty\, resentment\, affection\, and conflict shaped family decisions\, relationships\, and legacies.  \nUsing real genealogical sources – letters\, census records\, court documents\, migration stories\, and oral histories—we uncover the emotional lives behind the paper trail. This course helps family historians move beyond “what happened” to explore why people behaved the way they did.

SUMMARY:The Glory and the Art of Vienna - T420
DESCRIPTION:This lecture celebrates the glories of the city that was for many centuries the capital of a great European empire. Learn more about the Austrian architects who added modern architectural designs to make the city now an exemplar of the styles of ages past and present. Not forgetting a look at Vienna’s leading role in the worlds of art\, music and literature. \nWe’re delighted to offer our afternoon talks on a Pay What You Can basis. We believe everyone should have access to educational and cultural opportunities\, and that no one should be excluded because of their financial circumstances. SUMMARY:Architects in the Garden – Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe - GI 26 200
DESCRIPTION:Seventy years ago\, as the first Sputnik orbited between the Earth and the Moon\, Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe began his design for the ‘Sky Garden’ on the roof of Harvey’s Department Store in Guildford. His concept was for a roof garden that would literally hang between the earth and the sky\, reflecting the heavens in its watery pools. This lecture will explore Jellicoe’s life and garden design ideas.

SUMMARY:Singleness in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice\, Emma\, and Sense and Sensibility - GI 26 201
DESCRIPTION:As a single woman\, Jane Austen was acutely aware of the pervasive marriage market\, frequently mocking it. Her iconic novels end with marriages between the heroes and heroines but how does she present the single state prior to happy endings? My course will explore Austen’s presentation of singleness as both a desirable and undesirable condition in three of Austen’s iconic novels. \nParticipants should bring their copies of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice\, Sense and Sensibility and Emma.
