SUMMARY:Guildford Arts Exhibition - Photographer John Walmsley
DESCRIPTION:Guildford Institute and Guildford Arts\, in collaboration with Guildford Festival of the Arts\, are pleased to present their next exhibition from talented artist John Walmsley. \nSpanning decades of extraordinary documentary photography\, this exhibition traces John’s artistic journey from his formative years at Guildford School of Art right up to recent town events. With a dedicated focus on ordinary people living their lives\, John’s work offers a rich\, intimate record of communities and moments that might otherwise go unnoticed. \nKnown for his immersive approach\, John often commits weeks at a time to living within the communities he photographs — building trust\, absorbing atmosphere\, and capturing life with authenticity and warmth. \nThe exhibition showcases a compelling range of landmark projects: the 1968 sit-in at Guildford School of Art; a vivid portrait of life on the Wester Hailes housing scheme in Edinburgh in 1979; an insider’s view of the AA School of Architecture in 1975\, where John was a part-time lecturer; the colourful Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride along the High Street in 2024; and a behind-the-scenes look at a professional repertory theatre company in the 1970s. \nA celebration of real life\, real people\, and real moments.  \nMeet the Artist — 1 October 2026 @ The Guildford Institute — 7pm

SUMMARY:The Portrait in Britain: The Age of Van Dyck and Lely - GI 26 089
DESCRIPTION:In the early 17th century\, immigrant Flemish artists brought a new realism and sophistication to British portraiture. They included Daniel Mytens\, Peter Lely\, and – most spectacularly – Anthony Van Dyck. The course also covers the civil war and commonwealth period\, including native-born painters William Dobson and the talented miniaturist Samuel Cooper as we explore links between portraiture and 17th century history.

SUMMARY:Make-Believe & Memory: Digital Storytelling for People Living with Dementia - T403
DESCRIPTION:Dr Stephen Fay of the University of Surrey will discuss the benefits of creative storytelling for people living with dementia. His research in this area began in Colombia in early 2020\, made an urgent shift to digital delivery because of COVID-19\, and is now back in the UK and building a tool for on-demand access to what participants call their ‘daily dose of creativity’. Stephen will talk about the power of creativity and share some of the extraordinary stories crafted by the participant-authors he’s worked with. \nDelivered in partnership with the University of Surrey/SAHN (Surrey Arts and Humanities Network). \nWe’re delighted to offer our afternoon talks on a Pay What You Can basis. We believe everyone should have access to educational and cultural opportunities\, and that no one should be excluded because of their financial circumstances. Our talks are £7 for all – if anyone feels they need to pay less than this\, please call the team or visit us in person.

SUMMARY:Rowan Stuart – WE002
DESCRIPTION:GI Music Lounge\nOriginally from South Africa and now based in Devon\, Rowan Stuart creates atmospheric folk/pop music that explores the threshold between imagination and reality. With soulful vocals\, expressive guitar playing\, rhythmic grooves\, and elegant cinematic production\, he crafts songs rich in atmosphere\, imagery\, and detail. \nRowan’s work is rooted in a lifelong instinct to build worlds. As a child\, he filled pages with imagined places\, strange machines\, and forgotten landscapes that often felt more coherent than the world around him. Discovering music became a way to bring those inner worlds into shared experience. That instinct continues to shape his work today\, guided by a simple belief: “I live between the world I feel and the one I see\, and my music is where they meet.” \nOn record or on stage\, this is music that invites immersion – whether alone at night or in a room of like-minded wanderers drawn to beauty\, mystery and reflection. Rather than offering escape\, Rowan’s music invites listeners to return to the world with renewed curiosity and wonder. \n  \n \n  \nDoors/bar open 7pm \nMusic from 7.30pm (with interval) \nEnhance your event experience with an optional light meal from V Café\, featuring quiche and salad. A vegan alternative is available upon request. Simply select the “Includes Light Meal” ticket option when booking and collect from the bar before the event starts. \n \nThis event is sponsored by Andertons Music Co. \nOur GI Music Lounge events are held as fundraising events for The Guildford Institute.
