SUMMARY:Renoir and the Women of Paris – GI 26 132
DESCRIPTION:Throughout his long career\, Pierre-Auguste Renoir painted women – his wife\, his mistresses\, his friends\, professional models\, young working-class girls\, actresses and society women. Women were his main source of inspiration\, the eternal object of seduction\, the living embodiment of art and beauty; his images represent Parisian society at the height of Impressionism. This course will critically consider Renoir’s approach and style evolution\, coinciding with the exhibition ‘Renoir and Love’ at the National Gallery\, London\, 03 October 2026 – \n31 January 2027.

SUMMARY:Two Histories of the Bayeux Tapestry – GI 26 133
DESCRIPTION:This activity has now sold out – due to demand we have organised a repeat course. \nSince its creation 950 years ago\, The Bayeux Tapestry has never left France; this year\, it will be on loan to the British Museum (10 September 2026 – 11 July 2027). No medieval artefact is remotely comparable to it – its almost intact survival is little short of miraculous. Nearly 70 metres long\, it depicts the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings in 1066. In this course we will examine the story that it tells us\, scene by scene. Then we will explore the remarkable\, and sometimes turbulent\, history of the tapestry itself. Two histories in one morning! \n

SUMMARY:History & Restoration of the Wey & Arun Canal - T406
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that it was once possible to travel by barge all the way from Weybridge to Littlehampton? Before the construction of railways\, waterways performed the very important purpose of bulk transport of goods. \nAfter lying fallow for a century\, growing interest in conserving and restoring canals for recreation and leisure encouraged the creation of a related society in 1970 which became the Wey & Arun Canal Trust in 1973. \nThis is the story of the canal and the 50 years of progress towards its restoration as the southernmost arm of the national network. \nWe’re delighted to offer our afternoon talks on a Pay What You Can basis. We believe everyone should have access to educational and cultural opportunities\, and that no one should be excluded because of their financial circumstances. Our talks are £7 for all – if anyone feels they need to pay less than this\, please call the team or visit us in person.
