SUMMARY:19th Century Londoners at Work and Play on the River Thames - GI 26 178
DESCRIPTION:The Thames was a bustling river providing drinking water\, employment and leisure activities for Londoners. In the 19th century polluted water was linked to cholera epidemics and new docks brought changes to the way the river was used. Life on the Thames developed with commercial traffic\, rowers\, regattas\, and pleasure seekers all vying for space on the busy river.

SUMMARY:The Romance and the Reality of 1940: Britain’s ‘Finest Hour’ - T415
DESCRIPTION:With a range of powerful human stories Phil has collected from the heroes of 1940\, this lecture promises to entertain and surprise in equal measure. \nContaining many stirring stories of love\, loss\, heroism and sacrifice\, along with some authentic ‘naughty’ jokes and songs from the period. But also raising a series of provocative questions. \nYou will come away with an increased understanding of the most celebrated year in British history\, and a deep admiration for the men and women who rose to an unprecedented challenge as the future of the world hung in the balance. \nWe’re delighted to offer our afternoon talks on a Pay What You Can basis. We believe everyone should have access to educational and cultural opportunities\, and that no one should be excluded because of their financial circumstances. Our talks are £7 for all – if anyone feels they need to pay less than this\, please call the team or visit us in person.

SUMMARY:Architects in the Garden – Sir Edwin Lutyens - GI 26 179
