‘Without music, life is a blank to me.’

Jane Austen, Emma

Jane Austen enjoyed piano-playing as well as novel-writing. This course examines the role of music in Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and Emma, considering how Austen uses music to characterize her heroines and create plot diversions. Keen readers are welcome and this course assumes no former study of music. If you love reading Austen’s fiction and are curious about her musical side, this is the course for you.
