John was born in Kent but has lived in Surrey since 1977 and in Guildford since the early 1990's. He was a Probation Officer in the local area for over 30 years until he retired in 2008. John likes music, film and art, particularly from the Impressionist period onwards. He has been vegetarian for many years and does a lot of cooking. John also enjoys ferreting around in local auctions and buying and selling bits and pieces from time to time.
After a few years of retirement, John felt he needed a bit more structure to his week and was looking round for something useful to do. He heard about opportunities for volunteering at the Institute through a friend who is a trustee.
John works on Wednesdays which, in addition to the normal reception duties, involves helping to set up the room for the Wednesday talks and checking people in as they arrive. Occasionally, he accompanies visits making sure that everyone gets on and off the coach at the appropriate time!
John likes meeting and getting to know a variety of people at the Institute and the sense of contributing to something really worthwhile.
