Surreal, bizarre, grotesque, absurd, wildly original, hilariously funny – these are some of the words often used to describe the works of the Ukrainian-Russian writer Nikolai Gogol. Yet this pivotal figure in Russian and world literature – and his writings – remain an enigma and a mass of contradictions.
No previous knowledge or familiarity with the works of Gogol is required.
