Overview
Talk by Jonathan Jones
Vera Brittain is best known for A Testament of Youth, her memoir of the Great War 1914-18. This talk will look at her life up to and including the war years which she spent as a nurse. Particularly addressing her involvement with four young men who were to feature strongly in her life, and who were to die during that conflict: her beloved brother Edward, her fiancé Roland Leighton, school friend Victor Richardson and Geoffrey Thurlow – Edward’s fellow officer.
The talk will be interspersed with readings of her poetry, that of Roland Leighton, and other contemporary poets.
We’re delighted to offer our afternoon talks on a Pay What You Can basis. We believe everyone should have access to educational and cultural opportunities, and that no one should be excluded because of their financial circumstances. Our talks are £7 for all – if anyone feels they need to pay less than this, please call the team or visit us in person.
