This course explores Russian architecture and interiors through the lens of elite female patronage, focusing on palaces and other city projects instigated by royal women. Beginning around 1725 and moving through the imperial period, we will discuss, among others, Empresses Elizabeth and Catherine II, and the two Empress Consorts known after marriage as Maria Feodorovna (born Sophie Dorothea of Württemberg, and Dagmar of Denmark respectively).

About the Speaker
Dr Louise Hardiman
Dr Louise Hardiman specialises in Russian and Ukrainian art, the international Arts and Crafts movement, and the history of British-Russian cultural exchange. She is an independent consultant, writer, and lecturer, and her publications include an edited volume on British-Russian artistic relations and two books of translated Russian folk tales by the artist Elena Polenova.
