Session 1: Exploring Surrey’s Church Monuments
In the morning, uncover Surrey’s fascinating range of memorials in its churches and graveyards. They range from Medieval brasses and effigies to poignant individual commemorations of sons lost in the Great War. We also study the complex symbolism of Tudor tombs (including George Abbot’s in Holy Trinity, Guildford) the opulence of the Baroque, Neoclassical restraint and Victorian sentiment.
Session 2: Exploring Surrey Through Artists’ Eyes
In the afternoon, discover those artists who unlocked Surrey’s artistic potential. Constable sketched in Epsom, and Turner depicted Guildford and Godalming. However, it was the Victorians who truly discovered Surrey’s artistic potential. We will focus on artists who worked in our area, the North Downs and Southwest Surrey. They include Redgrave and Cole; Linnell and Palmer in Redhill; the Witley artists Hook Foster and Helen Allingham, also Cecil Lawson in Haslemere. working in the North Downs and Southwest Surrey: Redgrave, Cole, Linnell, Palmer, Hook Foster, Helen Allingham, and Cecil Lawson.
There will be breaks throughout the day.
