We explore British portraiture in the age of Elizabeth I and James I – and Shakespeare. Largely cut off from continental developments (despite artistic immigrants), British art developed a colourful decorative approach, often rich in symbolism. Sculptors include Gerard Johnson and the Christmas brothers. Painters include Marcus Gheeraerts, Robert Peake and William Larkin, also the glorious miniaturists, Hilliard and Oliver.
