Overview

The Restoration of Charles II in 1660 entrenched Baroque grandeur and generalisation in British portraiture, with leading artists such as Kneller. In the late seventeenth century only John Michael Wright created individualistic images.  Artists we study include Michael Dahl, Mary Beale and the Devis family. In the mid-eighteenth century, Hogarth created forceful, characterful portraits, heralding British portraiture’s golden age.
