Overview

“Archaeology is rubbish.” It may sound surprising, but archaeology often begins with what people leave behind. From broken pottery and discarded tools to traces of ancient settlements, the “rubbish” of the past provides valuable insights into human history.

Archaeology: An Introduction is a comprehensive 12-week course designed to give students a solid foundation in archaeological methods, terminology, and practice. Exploring the development of archaeology from its early beginnings to the scientific techniques used today, students will develop observational skills while engaging with the theoretical, ethical, and practical challenges of the discipline.

Following a pathway similar to that of a first-year undergraduate archaeology student, the course combines personal study, group discussion, field observation, and a personal presentation. Students will build confidence in archaeological language, recording methods, excavation practices, and trench discipline, preparing them for future fieldwork opportunities.

Please note that the course is divided into two parts (see below) – students will need to participate both parts in order to join the excavation project.

Upon completion of the course, students will have the opportunity to apply for participation in an archaeological project and excavation in 2027.
