In this course we will look beyond the elegant drawing rooms of polite society and the excesses of the wealthy, to the underlying problems and unrest that were to be found in this period. War with France, fear of invasion, economic hardship and poverty made the early years of the nineteenth century a time of uncertainty and strife for many within society.
