We will examine primary sources, historical records, and archaeology to discover life in a First World War trench. How often were the soldiers engaged in hand-to-hand combat? Were the trenches always waterlogged, rat infested and filthy? How often was a soldier on the front line? Once in the trenches, were the soldiers under constant enemy fire? Was trench warfare futile?
There will be a 1-hour break for lunch.
