This richly illustrated course will examine the history of the turbulent years leading up to the First World War. During this period, there was an abundance of wealth on display and growing consumerism, but also much underlying poverty and discontent. The social history will be illustrated through artworks including James Abbott McNeill Whistler, John Singer Sargent, the Bloomsbury Group, and members of the Camden Town Group, such as Walter Sickert.
