Overview

Since its creation 950 years ago, The Bayeux Tapestry has never left France; this year, it will be on loan to the British Museum (10 September 2026 – 11 July 2027). No medieval artefact is remotely comparable to it – its almost intact survival is little short of miraculous. Nearly 70 metres long, it depicts the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings in 1066. In this course we will examine the story that it tells us, scene by scene. Then we will explore the remarkable, and sometimes turbulent, history of the tapestry itself. Two histories in one morning!

A repeat course will be offered subject to demand.
