In June 1990, plantswoman and garden designer Beth Chatto and garden writer Christopher Lloyd took a picnic on the beach at Dungeness, Kent. They stumbled on a fine Santolina plant among the pebbles and were invited by the owner, artist Derek Jarman, to explore the rest of his garden. Beth Chatto left the beach that day inspired to make her dry, gravel garden; the rest (as we say) is history.
