The Swing Riots of 1830 – 1832 took place against the increasing pauperisation of labourers. Riots began in Kent in November 1830 and swiftly spread across the counties of southern England. It was marked by attacks of arson against farmers and others, by the breaking of threshing machines, the sending of anonymous letters, demands for higher wages and relief and the exaction of customary “doles”. The common aim was the desire to improve the agricultural worker’s lot.

This illustrated talk will examine how the county of Surrey was affected by the riots including the hanging of one of the perpetrators.
