The lessons from the Apollo 1 mission were learned, however, it looked like the USSR would now win the race. NASA took an enormous risk with the first crewed flight of a Saturn V – it would go to the Moon. The Apollo 8 gamble paid off, and following Apollo 10 NASA was ready to take the final step – a lunar landing.
