Known as America’s ‘man-in-space’ program, Project Mercury (1958-63) was the program through which the newly created US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) learned to put a man into orbit, to understand the technical requirements and medical effects of entering an unknown environment, and to bring him back alive. How did the NASA and the Mercury 7 accomplish this task?
